What is RACI Matrix?

With every project, there’s always some risk associated whether it’s a simple project or a complex one. To deal with such uncertain risks, it’s always a good decision to incline towards a process that clearly defines the roles & responsibilities of each team member involved in the project. The RACI Matrix or Chart is something that helps define the roles of the team members.

What is RACI Matrix?

A RACI Matrix is a form of ‘Responsibility Assignment Matrix‘ that stands for:

  • Responsible: One who is responsible for certain tasks.
  • Accountable: One who is accountable for certain tasks.
  • Consulted: One who can be consulted for input or consultation on certain tasks.
  • Informed: One who should be informed or keep updated about the status of certain tasks.

The RACI Matrix is used to define the roles of each associated team members according to their involvement in the project. An example of a RACI Matrix has been shown below:

RACI Definitions explained in detail:

Responsible (R)
This role is assigned to a team member who is directly responsible to accomplish a certain task. For each task in the project, at least one member has to be Responsible.
A few team members who can be considered for this role are:

Accountable (A)
This team member is one who reviews an ongoing task before it is considered accomplished. There can be only one team member who can be Accountable for a task but there can be situations when the same person is also Responsible for the same task.
A few team members who can be considered for this role are:

  • Project Manager
  • Product Owner/Manager
  • Team Lead

Consulted (C)
This team member is one who is being consulted for input on certain tasks before a task is completed or signed off. The consultation can be anything related to technical, legal, etc. that pave the path to success of the project.
A few team members who can be considered for this role are:

  • Software Architect
  • QA Manager
  • Compliance Officer
  • Legal Counsel

Informed (I)
Those team members who wants to have an update on what’s going on are kept in this category. Other team members share updates with Informed team members.
A few team members who can be considered for this role are:

  • Clients
  • Customer Support Team
  • Management
  • Admin
